Is your community a place of masculinity that’s safe? * The shoulds of masculinity… if it’s not like that, then are you even a man (spoiler: should are never helpful). These should are usually getting in the way of you having great s€x, btw * Semen retention is not evidence based nor a healthy behaviour, and aligns with notions of toxic masculinity (excluding religious and culture values around this, simply talking biopsychosocially) * Masculinity is mostly equated to being straight. So what then for queer men? * @silvanevespsychotherapy : P0rn is not a monolith. Violence against women and rape predates p0rn by centuries. And we have evidence that men who watch p0rn actually have more egalitarian views on p0rn… * Misogyny predates p0rn. Yet the p0rn we have reflects our own culture - @erikalustfilms. Yet why is there so much demand for mysoginistic p0rn? It predates p0rn! Porn becomes the scapegoat * @danwhitlam : Most men seem happy being ignorant and making jokes (“just being boys”). Men can learn from one other in a positive way! * Hardly any representation of male affection and emotional sharing in western world, pop culture and social media. Part ONE: Positive masculinity Last week while in Part ONE: Positive masculinity Last week while in London, I had the opportunity to finally attend a s€x talks, hosted by the beautiful @emmalouiseboynton. And I got to see some of my favourite friends/colleagues while there! The subject was positive masculinity. And what a brilliant evening it was, exploring and considering all aspects of masculinity; beyond the toxicity we are often exposed to (speaking about THAT guy…). The panelists brought a wealth of knowledge and helped the audience think critically about the construction of masculinity. @emmalouiseboynton , you are a truly brilliant conversationalist and brain! Please keep doing this and so much more. I can’t recommend attending one of these brilliant monthly events enough! Reminiscing about a wonderful, intense, beautiful Reminiscing about a wonderful, intense, beautiful and fantastic week in Turkey for the @wasworldsexualhealth conference. Got to hang out with some of my most favourite people who I haven’t seen since Mexico City in 2019 (thanks Covid) and make some special new friends. Got to focus on (almost) only work and knowledge for a whole week. And take a much needed break from being a parent. Did I miss my loved ones? I actually didn’t 🤐 I slept well and my mind was so full. But by the time I got home I couldn’t wait to see them. Today is #worldsexualhealthday, and this year’s Today is #worldsexualhealthday, and this year’s theme is #consent - a topic that deserves our continual and undivided attention. Consent, it's more than just a word. It's the foundation upon which healthy, fulfilling, and respectful intimacy is built. It's about ensuring that every action and every touch is rooted in communication, understanding, and enthusiastic agreement. We need to break away from generic conversations and dive deep into the world of sexual consent. We need to strive to cultivate a culture that respects and champions bodily autonomy, where NO always means NO, and YES is freely given from a place of being informed and genuinely desiring. Every person has the right to control their own body, boundaries, and desires. EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. It's crucial that we continually challenge ourselves to unlearn harmful narratives surrounding consent. Consent is a dynamic, ongoing process, not a one-time checkbox. Communication, enthusiastic agreement, and respect for boundaries are crucial. And consent isn't limited to sexual encounters alone. It extends to every aspect of our lives, such as friendships and conversations. So, let's stand united, educate ourselves and others, and amplify the voices of those whose stories have been silenced. I want to know what your experience was like, and how as healthcare providers, we can best support those on this journey by learning from your experiences. While this study focuses on the experiences of cisgender women, I want to acknowledge that anyone with a vagina could experience unwanted sexual pain.
